I enjoyed sketching Endeavour, rekindling all my boyhood space travel dreams. Endeavour was in fact built as a replacement to Challenger, and between 19 she flew 25 missions into the earth’s orbit. It is not some shiny sci-fi spaceship, it is very functional feeling, made up of a series of tough looking squares, each one numbered, looking almost like it was cobbled together on the job. Endeavour, the newest orbiter in NASA’s Space Shuttle fleet, lifted off from Pad 39B (at 7:40 p.m. Up close, it looks different than I expected. Now it is at the California Science Center in LA’s Exposition Park. When Endeavour was retired, it was flown to LA on the back of a large airplane, and passed over Sacramento – and Davis – on the way to a Bay Area flyover, before heading down to its resting place in Los Angeles. The exhibit will be the only authentic Space Shuttle stack in existence. The orbiter Endeavour was lifted into the air and mated to a flightworthy External Tank and Solid Rocket Boosters. I did see this one before, from a good distance. The public was reminded of the Shuttle’s majesty last Monday when the California Science Center took a major step towards completing a one-of-a-kind display. It was a scary moment for me, when the realities of space travel broke my fantasy of becoming an astronaut except I never really wanted to become an astronaut, I just wanted to go to space, float around a bit, maybe meet some aliens. I put the newspaper on my bedroom wall, along with the photos of all the astronauts. In the case of a powerful earthquake, the shuttle would only glide gently back and forth, having been separated from the ground. The Space Shuttle Endeavour is displayed at the California Science Center on Jin Los Angeles, California. I read every article about that I could find. When Endeavour was rolled into its pavilion at the end of a three-day road trip in October 2012, it was mounted atop four friction-pendulum seismic isolators. I remember clearly the Challenger disaster, when I was 10, that shocking image, that double headed explosion. That massive fuel tank that falls away, the spacewalks, the landing back on Earth, as far as I was concerned, it was something we would all be riding on in The Future. Please refer to the official NASA site for more details. In early March we went to LA, and saw the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Note: date and times may vary due to weather and launch conditions. The following list details the last flights for the Shuttle: So the dream of mankind traveling in space will have to wait further into the future. Unfortunately, this is the last year for NASA’s Shuttle program. One day, perhaps, a ship will be used as human transportation between planets. So, for that as my inspiration, plus the basic structure of the Shuttle, I worked extra on the concept design for the spaceship, including windows for passengers and sleeker aerodynamics. As a kid, I marveled at the art for sci-fi such as in Star Wars. This drawing, originally, was to be a simple cartoon, but I liked how the drawing turned out, so I pushed it to be more complete, painting it digitally in Photoshop.
